Draupadi Murmu Short Biography
Droupadi Murmu, an Indian politician, has served as the nation’s 15th and current President since July 25, 2022. She is the first indigenous person to hold the role, and the second woman to do so after Pratibha Patil.Additionally, she is the President is the youngest ever. In addition, she is the first president of independent India. She held several positions in the cabinet of the Government of Odisha between 2000 and 2004 before being elected President. From 2015 to 2021, she served as Jharkhand’s ninth governor. After serving as a clerk in the State Irrigation and Power Department from 1979 to 1983, she worked as a teacher in Rairangpur till 1997.
Personal life
On June 20, 1958, DroupadiMurmu was born to a Santali family in the village of Uparbeda in the Rairangpur, Odisha, neighborhood of Baidaposi. Her father, Biranchi Narayan Tudu, was a farmer. Her father and grandfather served as the local council’s traditional leaders, or Sarpanch (Gram Panchayat). They gave her the name Puti Tudu. Her teacher changed her name from Durpadi to Droupadi, and she had previously gone by the names Dorpdi and Durpadi.
At the neighborhood elementary school in Uparbeda, Murmu studied elementary education. She came to Bhubaneswar at the age of five to pursue higher education. She attended Girl’s High School Unit 2 for her secondary education and Rama Devi Women’s College for her bachelor’s degree in the arts.
She married businessman Shyam Charan Murmu in 1980, and the two of them had two sons and a daughter. She lost her spouse, two boys, mother, and one brother between 2009 and 2015.She subscribes to the Brahma Kumaris school of thought.
Early career
From 1979 until 1983, Murmu worked as a junior assistant in the irrigation division of the government of Odisha. From 1994 until 1997, she worked as a teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Centre in Rairangpur, where she taught arithmetic, geography, Hindi, and Odia. She never requested payment in full from the school.
Religion and land bill
She approved the 2017 Freedom of Religion Bill and the Jharkhand Assembly’s bill to alter the 2013 Land Acquisition Act.
Coercion or seduction of someone into changing their religion is now against the law and carries a three-year prison sentence. The sentence is increased to four years in prison if the victim of coercion is a woman, a minor, or a Scheduled Caste or Tribe member. In any scenario, fines may be assessed. Additionally, the bill required that voluntary converts notify the Deputy Commissioner of their conversion and provide complete information regarding the circumstances.
Political positions
She supports Hindu nationalism and the BJP party’s position on establishing Hindi as the official language of India (Hindutva). She backs the BJP’s proposed 2020 Indian agriculture laws (known as the farm laws).
Murmu admires Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister. She has praised B. R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi for their roles in drafting the Indian Constitution.
