Biraja Temple, also known as VirajaKshetra, is one of the ancient Hindu temples located in the Jajpur district of Odisha, India. The temple was built back in the (thirteenth) 13th century. It is located in the Jajpurtownship, which is nearly 125 KM north of Bhubaneswar. The main idol is Devi Durga, who Viraj worships. According to shiv Puran, the biraja temple is a shaktipeeth Jajpur.
The idol has two hands; in one hand, she pierces the chest of Mahishasura with a spear, and on the other hand, she is holding the tail of the Mahishasura. The Durga idol is standing on Lion on one leg, and the other leg is on Mahishasura’s chest. The Mahishasura(demon) is depicted as a Buffalo, not as a regular human demon. Devi’s crown symbolises Ganesha, a Crescent moon and a Shivalinga. The temple covers a large area with several Shiva linga and other deities. The goddess of the temple is considered to be Adya or the primary goddess; she took birth when Lord Bramha performed a yagna in Champak van. AdiShankaracharya and other texts call her Girija (which means Devi Parvati) or the one who is born of the mountain.
Biraja means the one without Raja or one who has only SattvaGuna. She is also treated as Vaishnavi, born out of the Vishnu Yagna.
