Sri Chamundeshwari Temple Mysore

Sri chamundeswari temple is at a distance of thirteen (13km) from Mysore(Karnataka). Sri chamundeswari temple is famous all over the world. It is the temple of Devi Durga, or chamundeswari, who killed the renowned demon mahishasura (the buffalo-headed demon).

 The temple has a height of three thousand four hundred and eighty-nine feet(3489 feet) and can be seen while traveling from Mysore. It is believed that the Maharaj of Mysore, when he came into power in 1399 AD, being a devotee of Devi Durga or chamundeshwari, became their home idol and is still worshipped here.

Many rulers of history have contributed to maintaining the chamundeshwari temple at Mysore. The idol present in the temple is about a thousand years(1000years) old. Various precious ornaments and jewellery are present at the temple, which are donated by kings of that generation. It is believed that the Maharaj of Mysore, when he came into power in 1399 AD, being a devotee of Devi Durga or chamundeshwari, became their home idol and is still worshipped here.

According to a legend of goddess chamundeshwari temple (Mysore), there was once a demon named Mahisasura, the buffalo demon. He meditated for many years and was granted a boon by Lord Brahma that no man could defeat him. Using the boon, he started murdering people and capturing places and even attacked swarga or heaven. Lord Shiva and Parvati saw a loophole in the boon, and Devi Parvati was granted extra powers and weapons to fight the demon.

There was a fight for ten (10 days), and the goddess took the form of chamundeshwari while fighting the battle. She was also gifted a lion as her Vahan. The war ended with Mahishasura’s death.

The Chamundi hills at east Mysore are named after Devi chamundeshwari. The hills are about thousand (1000 m) metres in height. It is located thirteen (13km) east of Mysore.

By road – Chamundi hills is very well connected by road to Mysore. There are vehicles available after every twenty minutes (20 min) on the road.

By Train- The closest railway station that connects the Chamundi hills is at Mysore. It is about thirteen (13km) away.

By air- Bangalore will be the closest airport with a distance of about one hundred sixty (160km). The devotees or tourists can travel from Bangalore by road or rail.
