He started out by sailing westwards across the Atlantic Ocean to find an easier route to India. However, after some time, he got lost in uncharted seas and eventually became stranded on an island for two years. His ship had been wrecked on a small island in what is now called Puerto Rico – today known as Hispaniola (Haiti). This is where Columbus made landfall on October 12th 1492 at 4 p.m., just before sunset.

His voyages, which took him across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, helped spread Christianity to many parts of the world.

He founded a colony there called La Isabela on his first voyage but abandoned it when he returned home because of poor conditions at sea. But this was not the end of Columbus discovery.
