A Short Note On Mahatma Gandhi

He was born in Porbandar, Gujarat, on October 2, 1869. His mother’s name was Putlibai, and his father was Karamchand Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi wed Kasturba in an arranged union when he was 13. They have four sons: Ramdas, Devdas, Harilal, and Manilal. Until her death in 1944, she helped her husband in all of his activities.
In Western British India’s Porbandar, the capital of a minor principality, his father served as Dewan, or Chief Minister (Now Gujarat State). Putlibai, his father’s fourth wife, was from a wealthy Vaishnava family, and she bore Mahatma Gandhi. He was greatly affected in his early years by the tales of Shravana and Harishchandra, which emphasised the value of truth.

Gandhi, Mahatma: Education

Gandhi attended a neighbourhood school in Rajkot when he was nine years old, where he learned the fundamentals of math, history, geography, and languages. He attended a high school in Rajkot when he was eleven years old. His marriage disrupted his studies for at least a year, after which he rejoined the school system and finished his education. In 1888, he enrolled in Samaldas College in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. Mavji Dave Joshi, a family friend, sought higher education in London, including law. Gandhiji, dissatisfied with his academic performance at Samaldas College, became thrilled about the London plan and persuaded his mother and wife that he would not touch non-vegetarian food, alcohol, or women.

Onward to London

Mahatma Gandhi departed for London in 1888 to pursue a legal education. He joined the Inner Temple, one of the four London law colleges, ten days after arriving and began studying and practising law there. He also joined a vegetarian organisation in London, where he met some vegetarian friends who introduced him to the Bhagavad Gita. Bhagavad Gita later left an impression and had an impact on his life.

Gandhi was in South Africa.

He moved to South Africa in May 1893 to practise law there. Although he had a first-class ticket, he was forced out of the first-class apartment of the train since it was solely for white people, and no Indians or Black people were allowed to travel in first class. This was his first-hand encounter with racial discrimination. He was deeply affected by this occurrence and decided to resist racial prejudice. He added that his fellow Indians, mockingly referred to as “coolies,” frequently experienced incidents of this nature.

Gandhi's contribution to the movement for Indian independence

Gandhiji joined the Indian National Congress in 1915 after making a permanent return to India under the mentorship of Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Gandhi’s first significant accomplishment was leading the Champaran and Kheda agitations in Bihar and Gujarat in 1918. In opposition to the British administration, he also spearheaded the non-cooperation, civil disobedience, Swaraj, and Quit-India movements.

Satyagraha, according to Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi referred to his overarching strategy of nonviolent protest as Satyagraha. Martin Luther and Nelson Mandela were notable individuals influenced by Gandhiji’s Satyagraha in their pursuit of social justice, equality, and independence. Actual values and non-violence were the cornerstones of Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha.

Death of Mahatma Gandhi

The assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi took place on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse. Godse belonged to the Hindu Mahasabha and advocated Hindu nationalism. Gandhi was opposed to the philosophy of non-violence and was accused of favouring Pakistan.
