Rahul Gandhi Biography in Brief

As we all know, Rahul Gandhi is one of the most famous politicians and is a member of the Indian National Congress as well as a member of the Parliament. Shortly and briefly, let us look at Rahul Gandhi’s biography. 

Who Is Rahul Gandhi?

Rahul Gandhi is an Indian politician and a member of the Indian Parliament in the 17th LokSabha, representing Wayanad’s constituency in Kerala. He was born on 19th July 1970. He was the president of the Indian National Congress from 16th December 2017 to 9th July 2019. Currently, he is the chairperson of other organisations, such as the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India. He is also the trustee of Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

Life of Rahul Gandhi before the INC

Rahul Gandhi was born in Delhi in 1970 to his parents, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi and was also the grandson and great-grandson to Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, respectively. 

For primary and secondary education, Rahul Gandhi attended St. Columba’s School in Delhi and then The Doon School in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, from 1981 through 1983. Since then, both Rahul Gandhi and her sister Priyanka Gandhi (now PriyankaVadra) were home-schooled due to their grandmother, Indira Gandhi’s assassination and numerous threats to the Gandhi family. 

In 1989, Rahul Gandhi went to St. Stephen’s College for his undergraduate degree but then transferred to Harvard University after the first-year examinations. In 1991, when his father Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated, Rahul Gandhi joined Rollins College in Florida for security reasons and got a B.A. degree in 1994 under the name of Raul Vinci. He then went on to pursue M.Phil. from Trinity College, Cambridge.

After completing his education, Gandhi worked at a management consulting firm, The Monitor Group, in London for three years. In 2002, he returned to India to set up his technology consultancy in Mumbai, namely the Backups Services Pvt. Ltd. He then opened another firm, Back Ops UK, which used to acquire contracts from foreign companies to provide to the Indian National Army.

Positions held in the Parliament

As a member of the Parliament, Rahul Gandhi was elected through four consecutive terms for the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th LokSabha, respectively, in the years 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019. He has completed all his last three terms to their full extent and continuing his fourth term of the 17th LokSabha. 

  • In the year 2004, he was also on the Standing Committee on Home Affairs from 2004 to 2006 and on Human Resource Development from 2006 through 2009.
  • After being elected to be a member of the 15th LokSabha and a part of the Standing Committee on Human Resource Development, he was also in the Consultative Committee on Rural Developments.
  • In 2014, he became a part of the Standing Committee in External Affairs and the Consultative Committee in the Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs.
  • Currently, in his fourth term, he is a member of the 17th LokSabha, the Standing Committee on Defence, and the Consultative Committee in the Ministry of External Affairs.
